Bank syariah di Indonesia

Sebagai negara berpenduduk muslim terbanyak di dunia, Indonesia rupanya juga memiliki bank / lembaga keuangan syariah terbanyak di dunia. Sampai dengan tahun 2016, tercatat ada sekitar 200 bank / lembaga keuangan syariah yang ada di Indonesia.

Keberadaan bank / perbankan syariah di Indonesia sudah ada hampir 30 tahun yang lalu. Pertama kali, perbankan syariah dirintis pada tahun 1992 -- adalah dengan berdirinya Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI). Semenjak kemunculan Bank Muamalat, bank syariah lainnya pun mulai marak bermunculan di Indonesia.

Maraknya kemunculan bank syariah di Indonesia tak lepas dari prospek cerah di sektor keuangan syariah yang ada di negeri ini. Hal itu tak lepas dari antusiasme masyarakat yang ingin menerapkan sistem syariah dalam perekonomian mereka -- sehingga perlu disokong oleh sistem perbankan berbasis syariah.

Selain prospeknya yang bagus, kemunculan bank syariah juga didukung oleh Undang-Undang Nomor 21 Tahun 2008 perihal Perbankan Syariah. Undang-undang ini menjadi payung hukum serta bukti pengukuhan akan kehadiran perbankan syariah di Indonesia.

Hingga tahun 2016, jumlah bank / lembaga keuangan syariah di Indonesia berjumlah 200 buah. Bank / lembaga keuangan syariah tersebut terbagi ke dalam 12 Bank Umum Syariah (BUS), 22 Unit Usaha Syariah (UUS), dan 165 Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS).
