Yangon - Myanmar's government accused of waging "a campaign of genocide" against the Rohingya Muslims. The number of mass graves and the Rohingya residents who lost their homes, is a testament to that.
That accusation leveled human rights organization based in New York, United States, Human Rights Watch (HRW) as reported by news agency AFP on Monday (22/04/2013).
According to HRW, the Rohingya are not recognized by the government of Myanmar, face various forms of crimes against humanity including murder, persecution, deportation and forcible transfer.
According to HRW, Myanmar officials, community leaders and Buddhist monks organized and incited the masses to carry out attacks on Muslim villages in October 2012 and in Rakhine State.
"The Burmese government engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya continues to this day through restrictions on movement and withholding of aid," said HRW's deputy Asia director, Phil Robertson.
According to HRW, in Rakhine, more than 125 thousand Rohingya and other Muslims have been expelled forcibly from their homes and do not have access to humanitarian assistance. At least 180 people were killed in a series of sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine since June 2012. But human rights groups believe, the actual number of victims is much higher.
According to HRW, Myanmar authorities also destroyed mosques in Rakhine and mass arrests. In fact according to HRW, security forces defend or assist Myanmar Buddhists are attacking mulim community.
In a report based on interviews of more than 100 people, HRW said it found evidence of four sites of mass graves in Rakhine. According to HRW, Myanmar authorities tried to conceal evidence of crimes against the Rohingya people.
