Dinosaur triceratops suspected of having links with closed head and tail structures fans have lived in the area now known as South Korea, about 103 million years ago. This is the first horned dinosaur discovery in the Korean peninsula.
Discovery, published in the journal Naturwissenschaften: The Science of Nature on November 18, this includes the backbone, hip bone, partial arm back, and tail are almost intact. This dinosaur was named Koreaceratops hwaseongensis and allegedly lived in the early Cretaceous period.
This discovery, according to Michael J Ryan, filling the void between 20 million years in the fossil first appearance in Asia and North America. Ryan is a curator and head of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History vertebrate paleontology section involved in the writing of the journal.
'This is a rare discovery, "said Ryan. Dinosaur fossils are not usually found in this region, except for evidence of dinosaur eggs and footprints.
Dinosaurs Korea is estimated to have 150 to 180 centimeters long and weighs 30 to 50 pounds. By that measure, this dinosaur is small compared with the relatives of Triceratops found in North America. Shape like a parrot beak at the front of the jaw, leading researchers to suspect that the herbivorous animals.
Ryan and his colleagues suspect, bipedal dinosaurs and can move quickly. "Its tail is unique," said Ryan. For a dinosaur, a short tail. Some long spines called neural arches (neural arch) protruding from the tail appendage.
There are several possible reasons why dinosaurs had tails like this. 'One of them purely for show. So, the fan on the tail end can be colored and if reversed can be a tool signaling. It could be developed as part of the flag so that it can give a signal to other animals or to attract the opposite sex, "said Ryan.
The body shape also helps heat exchange or also helped swim. The researchers suspect this dinosaur spent much time hunting for food in the water.
