Novel Alloy Could Produce Hydrogen Fuel from Sunlight

Scientists from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville have determined that an inexpensive semiconductor material can be "tweaked" to generate hydrogen from water using sunlight. The research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, was led by Professors Madhu Menon and R. Michael Sheetz at the University of Kentucky Center for Computational Sciences, and Professor Mahendra Sunkara and graduate student Chandrashekhar Pendyala at the University of Louisville Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research. Their findings were published Aug. 1 in the Physical Review B. The researchers say their findings are a triumph for computational sciences, one that could potentially have profound implications for the future of solar energy. Using state-of-the-art theoretical computations, the University of Kentucky-University of Louisville team demonstrated that an alloy formed by a 2 percent substitution of antimony (Sb) in gallium nitride (GaN) has the right electri

Scientists Initiate Action Plan to Advance Cultured Meat

Late last week, an international group of scientists took a step closer to their goal to produce cultured meat. They agreed on important common positions about how to bring the research forward during a workshop in Gothenburg, Sweden, arranged by Chalmers University of Technology and the European Science Foundation. Many technology components are now coming into place in order to realize the concept of cultured meat. This includes a cell source that is possible to use, several alternative processes to turn these cells into muscle cells for meat, and nutrients free of animal components which can be produced from sunlight and carbon dioxide. In addition, a life cycle assessment of cultured meat compared to traditionally produced meat was recently published. It shows that the environmental benefits of cultured meat are very large (see attached fact sheet). For example, compared to the rearing of cattle, cultured meat would entail dramatic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, land

Reasons Why Flies hard hit

How many times have you managed to swat a fly with a hand? Difficult is not it? The secret behind this capability is now known explanation. For the past 20 years researching the biomechanics of fly wings, Michael Dickinson of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) recently broke now. That, too, because she was always curious about the simple question and often asked many people he had met. "Now I have the answer," said Dickinson who conducted the study with Esther M and M Abe Zarem. He discovered the secret maneuvers after recording a number of threatened blow flies using a digital camera that can record the speed and resolution tinggi.Mereka found that flies can identify threats based on location. Otanya will calculate how much a threat to them before deciding to flap its wings and fled. After predicting the direction of the threat, foot rests to fly in the opposite direction. All the preparation can be done to escape very quickly, just 100 milliseconds

Cockroaches are a boon for the Environment

Black body, can run swiftly to the elusive and live in places dirty, humid, and nasty, made not a few people screaming at the sight of this one animal. But did you know that cockroaches have such great benefits to the environment? This was revealed by researchers from the University of Texas, USA. Professor Srini Kambhampati from the University of Texas says, the cockroach has an essential role in the survival of the planet ecosystem. If the cockroach population declined rapidly, the nitrogen cycle on earth would be disturbed. "Cockroach hobby eating the remains of organic waste that contains nitrogen. Nitrogen that enters the body and then released them on the ground and used for plant growth and development," said Kambhampati as quoted by the Huffington Post recently. "I
